What is The Island Review?

The Island Review is an online magazine dedicated to great writing and visual art that comes from, is inspired by, celebrates or seeks to understand the extraordinary appeal of islands, as places and as metaphors.

Launched in February 2013, the editors hope to provide an online home for islanders and island lovers everywhere.

What is an island?

Good question! According to Wikipedia (which cannot always be trusted) an island is:

“any piece of sub-continental land that is surrounded by water.”

Which sounds sensible enough.

However, the Oxford English Dictionary (which probably can be trusted) adds a second definition:

“a thing regarded as resembling an island, especially in being isolated, detached, or surrounded in some way.”

Which is fine too.

Both of these definitions are helpful, and taken together they provide a pretty good outline to The Island Review’s intended focus.
