Toads may not be the most handsome of creatures at the best of times, but those inhabiting the Brazilian island of Fernando de Noronha take ugliness to new levels.

Since being introduced many decades ago, the creatures have bred in huge numbers without fear of natural predators. Yet many have developed odd conditions, such as blindness and deformed or missing limbs. Scientists are now trying to solve the slippery case, as this article explains.
