Iona Notebooks is the culmination of Kate Walters’ residencies on Iona, where she stays in a shepherd’s bothy making paintings and drawings using a method she calls ‘becoming the hollow bone’.
Her practice explores the relationships between human, the natural world and dreams in works made from plant inks, earth pigment and peat, as well as watercolours, oil paint and monotype.
In the preface, Walters recalls a vivid encounter which speaks to the form of her new works:
Most days I would go to the beach at dusk. Once, while standing still as a tree, I saw a creature about the size of a dog moving down the beach; a moon-made animal with her curling gait. In my weather-wrapped stillness I was unobserved - or ignored - and, breathless with delight, I watched the otter merge with the sea and swim away through towering swell.
Iona Notebooks is a limited edition of just 200 copies published by Guillemot Press. Each copy is signed and numbered by the artist and comes with six accompanying postcards.
