Lost at sea

Perhaps the biggest island-related news story of the past week is that of José Salvador Alvarenga, a fisherman from Mexico who appeared in the Marshall Islands in the South Pacific last Friday, after apparently spending more than a year adrift in his boat. At first there was much scepticism about whether his tale could possibly be true, but information from Mexican authorities seems to confirm the story. Commentators are struggling to understand how somebody could stay alive at sea for 13 months, without even contracting scurvy.
