Since the end of 2012, Australia has been detaining asylum seekers on Manus Island, part of Papua New Guinea. Though the media are banned from visiting the island, it is believed there are currently over 200 adults and 34 children detained there. Conditions on the island are extremely poor, and earlier this month one detainee was killed and 77 were injured during clashes with guards.
