Nail houses

'Nail houses' are buildings that have remained in place while others have been demolished around them. Most often, owners have refused to sell their properties, and developments have carried on regardless. The result is often a very strange kind of island. The phenomenon is most common in China, where the government no longer has the right to 'compulsory purchase', as it does in many other countries. However, there are some well known examples in the USA too.
