from the islands
gave me a strip of cured
fish skin, slightly larger than
my palm. Crispy and translucent
when held to the light, like a page from
Poseidon’s bible, a patch from a mermaid’s
cape. ‘It’s made,’ she said, ‘from the kind of fish
legged men can only catch through the Winter
by breaking the Baltic ice and lowering
a line into the depths through the hole.
All through the Summer they lie
at the bottom cold and still
like the hands of
