Renewable island

Islanders on El Hierro, in the Canaries, are aiming to produce all of their energy from renewable sources by the end of 2014.

The tiny island has never been attached to the mainland electricity grid, and so has relied on diesel generators, which burn 6,600 tons of fuel each year for the 10,000 residents. But now a new scheme, combining wind and hydro power, should ensure that no more fossil fuel needs to be used.
