Photographs by John Rutherford
John Rutherford is a 44-year-old postman who lives in Aberdeen, Scotland. He is also an accomplished landscape photographer, whose work has attracted increasing attention on social media. Married, with two pre-teen daughters, he pursues his creative work “in weekly blocks”, travelling around Europe and the USA during his annual holidays, but as he explains, "For many years, I explored more of other countries than of my own. I neglected what was on my doorstep"
He fell into photography. It started as a hobby, something to do on the weekends while unwinding from work. "I joined a local photography club to learn the basics and meet like-minded people,” he says. “Later, I was invited to join an annual photography trip: a week-long immersion in the wild beauty of Scotland and her islands."
He has since photographed landscapes "from Iona to Tongue.” He has a particular affinity for Scotland’s rugged, sparsely populated islands: "Each is its own world, with its own unique landscape, history, and culture.”
