Colin Dickey has written a great piece for Lapham's Quarterly about the little island of Amsterdamøya, in northwest Svalbard. He offers a short history of the region, and its significance for the European whaling fleet, as well as a fascinating history of that most unpleasant of mariners' diseases: scurvy.
