Snakes alive!

Often on The Island Review we feature places that are beautiful and inviting. But not so today. Ilha de Queimada Grande, or Snake Island, is off the coast of São Paulo, and it is a very unpleasant place indeed.

The island is around 100 acres in size, and is home to the deadly poisonous golden lancehead snake (pictured below). A bite from one of these creatures can cause kidney failure, necrosis of muscular tissue, brain hemorrhaging, and intestinal bleeding. Fortunately these snakes are endemic to Ilha de Queimada Grande, so do not occur anywhere else. Unfortunately, there are hundreds of thousands of them on the island - more than one per square metre of land.

No wonder then that the Brazilian navy has banned people from visiting.
