Earlier this year, Sorren Maclean, a singer-songwriter from the island of Mull, released his debut album Winter Stay Autumn. Here, he introduces the album, and the island that helped inspire it.
The record was commissioned by Donald Shaw of Celtic Connections festival, as part of their New Voices series. I wrote the songs alongside string arrangements, using them as counter melodies weaving in and out of the songs, and perform them with a core band, that I play with in various other forms. It was recorded in An Tobar, on the Isle of Mull. Working there you appreciate being isolated from the mainland, it makes it easy to immerse yourself in writing and creating.
Winter Stay Autumn is an album written on and inspired by an island. Spending time on the road, you learn about what you miss most. Being from such a beautiful part of the world, it's easy to romanticise returning to the place you call home.
