Fifty years ago, a group of native Alaskans were forced to leave their ancestral home on King Island, in the Bering Sea. Now, an Anchorage poet, Joan Naviyuk Kane, has found funding to take a group of these islanders back for a visit. Listen to a radio programme about this story by clicking on the image below.
The only World War II land battle fought on United States territory was on the Aleutian Island of Attu, west of Alaska. And the island still bears the scars of that battle. This year the US Fish and Wildlife Service will survey the environmental damage that still lingers on Attu.
