The mountains of Lofoten

The stunning peaks of The Lofoten Islands in Norway are the focus of a short film by Michael Fletcher, who captured their rugged glory by drone throughout the midnattssol, or midnight sun.

This natural phenomenon takes place over several weeks in the summer, when the sun appears to never go below the horizon. The Earth's axis is angled sunward towards the north Arctic, creating a magical effect of a combined sunset and sunrise.

Christmas in Lofoten

The Winter solstice took place yesterday. It's when people who live in the northern hemisphere experience the longest night and shortest day of the year. In the Lofoten Islands in the far north of Norway only a few hours of daylight arrive, sometimes hardly enough to count as a day at all, and this will be the way of things for the next few months. But that doesn't stop islanders from getting into the festive spirit. See for yourself in this charming video showing the wonderful colours and sounds of Christmas in the high north.
