In recent weeks the Loch Ness Monster was temporarily eclipsed as Scotland's most famous dinosaur, as news broke about a new species of prehistoric predator identified from fossils discovered on the Isle of Skye. It appears that the 14-foot 'giant killer reptile', as the Daily Telegraph labelled it, and now known as Dearcmhara shawcrossi, prowled the waters around the Inner Hebrides some 170 million years ago. Resembling a cross between a dolphin and a crocodile, it was just one of a several huge beasts that lived in Scottish waters at the time. The discovery was first reported in the Scottish Journal of Geology and has received widespread coverage across the world.
