The island of California

Last year, Stanford Library acquired a collection of 800 maps showing the state of California as an island, a common misconception of early European travellers. According to writer Rebecca Solnit, the maps "show this weird kind of dance between imagination and desire on the one hand and exploration and fact on the other".

An introduction to the collection can be read here, and a slideshow featuring several of the maps can be viewed here.
